How Corporate Training Saved My Life

I don’t say this lightly: corporate training saved my life.
At the time, I was a stay-at-home mum in a marriage that was unbalanced and deeply unhappy. On the surface, it looked like a privilege — I didn’t have to worry about bills, I was there for my children. But inside, I was shrinking. I knew the woman I was showing up as in my family wasn’t the person I was inside.
I had ambitions I couldn’t articulate. And when I tried, I was dismissed. My whereabouts questioned. My dreams minimised.
The biggest turning point didn’t happen while I was a participant in a workshop, but while I was working at one. I wasn’t expecting to learn. I was there to support the session. But as I listened, I couldn’t help absorbing the lessons: self-awareness, communication, leadership, growth.
And when I brought those ideas home, his reaction was explosive.
He saw my growth as an annoyance. I saw it as an upgrade.
That was the moment I realized our values were no longer aligned.
I wish I had left sooner. But I stayed until the situation became unsafe — until he threatened my life. Better late than never.
That experience is why I believe so deeply in the power of training and development. Because it doesn’t just change careers. It can change the course of a life.
